Okay I have done this for in the past. Very easy to do. Write down on a piece of paper. M-F. like for exmaple:
Monday:
organized desk
do laundry
do dishes
Tuesday:
Vaccum Carpet and Rugs
Pick things up from around the house
Dust
Clean windows
Wednesday:
Rearrange Furniture
Take out trash
Organized hall closet
Thursday:
Clean figurines
Organized bookshelves
mop kitchen floor
etc ect .
As you do this things cross them off. Each Day should ONLY have 3 to 4 only. That way you don't feel overwhelm or stress. By the end of the week your place will be clean and organized. Then next week make a list of M-F and mix it alittle. Hope this helps Maria. It help my grandma and my mom out a lot. To this day they still make a list of weeksday and put 3-4 on that day. Hopes this helps you..

Ok, I think I can help! I was also in your position (who hasn't been, really?).

I found a lot of support and coaching on this website: www.flylady.net.

She is a woman who provides coaching to everyone who is trying to clean their house and organize everything.

She has a one-month plan to take back control, and at focuses on BABY STEPS to getting everything done so that you don't feel overwhelmed. Even though her orders seem too simplistic at first, just do it.... She has put a lot of thought into it and it is a tried and true method to cleaning your house and maintaining your sanity at the same time.

The specific page you need to look at is at:

Best of luck! Tell us how it goes!

In order for a home to stay clean every item in that home must have a place - or what I refer to as a "home".

Select one room to start in (do not start with the kitchen). Image the room as a clock. I always have the doorway as 12 o'clock.

Starting at the 1 o'clock position; Find a "home" for every item. If you can not find a "home" for an item you need to purge (either that item or another item that you do not use often). Store item with other like item or items that function in the same manner. Go through any drawers or closets at the 1 o'clock position and straighten the drawer or closet purging as you go. When that area is organized, dust the 1 o'clock position and then move to the 2 o'clock position.

As you are doing the room - DO NOT LEAVE THE ROOM!! Leaving the room can tempt you to become distracted and lose focus. Have three containers (boxes or laundry baskets) and a garbage bag. The garbage bag is for --- you guessed it --- garbage! One of the containers is for "donate", another for "unknown" and the last one for "another room". If there is something that you can not make a decision about, do not waste a lot of time just put it in the "unknown" box. After you have lived with the clean, organized room for a month - if you have not missed an item in the box or can not bear to bring it back into the room to clutter it up - then the decision is much easier to make ... Get Rid of It!

After going around the room and doing every position on the clock (the middle of the room is the hands and is last) then vacuum. After you are completely finished, which includes handling the three containers and garbage bag, take a few minutes to sit in the room and enjoy it!

After a room is clean I have three rules that I have trained my family to follow:
1) Always pick up after yourself - then not later!
2) Have a "home" for every thing you have.
3) Always improve a room in some way every time you go into it.

Following these three simple rules will result in a clean house!
