Don't Be Stingy - Come and Share Your House Cleaning Tips

I got up around 6am to go to my clients house. I went to the store to get some scrubbing bubbles to see if that would remove the years of nicotine. To my suprise it did. I think I went through 10-20 cans of that stuff. So tomorrow is painting day! Got home around noon, when my grandma had stop by to have lunch with me. After lunch I kept saying to myself that I wasn't going to clean at all. I sat down and was ready to turn on the T.V.. I was up getting my cleaning supplies, when my grandma asked me what I was doing. I told I was cleaning. She gave me look, and she said "Look around you, it's already clean".I said not to me. I spent from Noon-7:00pm cleaning everything and organizing everything. Grandma asked me if something was wrong. I said no why. Everyday I talk to you or stop by you are cleaning. Are you sure you don't want to see someone about this compulsive cleaning??? I stood there in a complete daze and I look right at her and I said "I don't have a problem, I just like keeping my place spotless, she said the place is already spotless, how spotless do you need it? I really didn't have an answer for you. But after she left, she told me "Call me when you AREN'T cleaning". I need people advice on this: Do you think that since I clean my place everyday even though it's clean, that I have a thing called compulsive cleaning??

Robert - this is an interesting question and one where you might need to be really honesty towards yourself. I am in the cleaning business, I like to clean, I am interested in cleaning, I like to keep my house clean and organized (as organized as you can with 2 teenagers), I enjoy helping others who don't have the time or inclination to clean there homes. I do know that from personal experience, cleaning can be a release of frustration or anger or pain - if I don't feel in control of a situation - cleaning is something that I can control, it is something that brings about a feeling of instant gratification. For me it is rote work - it can bring about a sense of relaxation if something is bothering me. I think you need to ask yourself 2 questions: 1.) Are you cleaning in order to avoid dealing with some emotional feelings? 2.) Would you somehow feel worthless or terribly bothered if you did not spend 6 hours a day cleaning your own home, which by default must be a pretty tidy and a clean home? Compulsions of any kind generally are not a good thing and usually occur because we are trying to avoid something else. I hope this does not sound like I am trying to psychoanalysis your situation. But since you did ask I thought I would offer this to you. I will also be frank, unless you are doing a major spring cleaning I think spending 6 hours at a time, on a regular basis cleaning your home when it is already spotless may be compulsive cleaning.

All the best to you,
Renee
