So I use a bagless vaccum cleaner when cleaning my clients home. And as most people they have pets'. I wanted to know is there any thing to keep the smell of dogs and cats out of my vaccum cleaner?

Thanks

Thanks every one for your input. Ill try a few things out and get back to you on this. I may end up buying another vaccum, but we will see.

Hello, I have a flooring business and always vaccuum when the carpet is finished being installed. I have always been afraid that when I use my vaccuum that I may pick up fleas and then bring them home to my dogs & cats. I don't worry any more. I buy a cheep flea collor and cut a small piece off of it about an inch long and put it in the bag or canister. I also buy moth flakes and sprinkle some in the bag or canster. It keeps the cleaner smelling very fresh and also kills any bugs that I could have picked up. I have been in business for over 30 years and never had a problem. I would recommend buying an AReus Electriclux vaccuum cleaner. They cost about $1000.00new but they last forever. I have had mine for 28 years and never broke a belt yet. I do take it in for service every year. I have tried all the new moldels out there and always come back to my electriclux. You can buy a re-furbish one on ebay for about $200-$300. I give all my carpet installer an electriclux to keep in the truck.

I never use carpet powder - it will shorten the life of your vacuum cleaner. The particles eventually clog up the pores of the filter causing the motor to run hot . If a client insists on using the carpet powder I insist on using their vacuum. Perhaps, you just need to make sure the you clean the waste canister on a daily basis making sure that you wipe clean all the residue - you should be able to rinse the canister with some mild detergent - make sure it is completely dry before attaching it back onto the vacuum.

If it is the tpe where you have a little cannister on the vaccumn cleaner.. You could get a small bit of rag or paper towel, and put some drops of lemon oil on it. You can get lemon oil from a health food/health products store. Crumple it up and put in in the cannister before you vacumn, Then turn it out when you empty the rest of the dust. I am thinking that hopefully, while it's in there, it will control the animal smell.

Get the pet fresh type of carpet powder and sprinkle liberally onto the carpets. Allow to sit on the floor a few hours then vacuum up and leave in the vacuum at least over night. This will scrub the inside of the vacuum clean and deodorize it beautifully. Do it every time you vacuum and you won't have to worry about the smell any more.
